Who Is Going?

I was sitting in the wonderful synagogue here in Mexico City, the one I have attend for several years during my annual Krav Maga visit to Mexico. A moment of peace, a moment of truth, a moment away from all the falsehoods and troubles of the world. I pity those who choose not to have such moments. This is my City of Refuge. 

And the wonderful rabbi read the words so beautifully, Moshe the great leader is speaking to Pharaoh King of Egypt and is demanding the right to leave, the great Exodus. And the king asks, "Who is leaving? "Who and who are those going?"

"And Moshe/Moses said; We shall go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters (Exodus, Chapter 10, verse 9)

 וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה בִּנְעָרֵינוּ וּבִזְקֵנֵינוּ נֵלֵךְ בְּבָנֵינוּ וּבִבְנוֹתֵנוּ 

And it hit me. In the quiet of the synagogue, that this is what it is all about; being inclusive rather than exclusive. That is we at IKI Krav Maga are all about. 

Many of the "finer institutions" pride themselves on being exclusive. Their premises and services are only open to an "elite" clientele, i.e. those of a certain financial status, or race.  An exclusive sale is only for our members etc.

But we are inclusive, as was Moshe. Who is going? Well, let me tell says Moshe. Everyone is going; men and women, young and old, boys and girls. We are all going because this is an inclusive activity. He even adds our sheep and cattle. (but that part is not relevant for the Krav Maga idea).

And so it is with us, we are not an exclusive gym, only for those in Olympic shape, only for those who championship abilities. No, we are open to everyone. 

So this Moshe repeats the words of the first Moshe; who is welcome? Everyone, young and old, male and female. But please leave your goats and sheep at home.
