Where You Want to Be

In life it is not enough to want something; in order to make it happen we must commit to it.

Los Angeles, a young musician is sitting with a top executive in the music industry. I know this well. The young musician is all about ideals, personal expression, musical creativity and honesty. In the real-world compromises must be made and difficult decisions must be reached, but first you must know what you really want. I recall when I was in that chair looking at a music executive.

I recently saw the same scene in a film, the tough aggressive executive asks the young artist - Are you ready to be super filthy rich? Are you ready to be famous, in the spotlight, being adored by millions? His response, "Yes, I guess so". The executive looks directly at the musician and says, "No, that is not the correct answer, yes, I guess so, is not correct. It is either YES, I will do whatever it takes to succeed, or the answer is goodbye, stop wasting my time."

There is wisdom here. The music industry is a cut-throat industry and only those willing to work very hard will succeed. I personally opted out of it. But I look at it here as Krav Maga lesson and a life lesson.

Let's go back to the original Karate Kid movie. When Mr. Miyagi is considering the possibility of training Daniel in the art of Karate, he gives him an analogy; “Walk on road, hmm? Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later…get squish just like grape.

if you walk on one side of the street you are safe, on the other side of the street, also safe, walk in the middle of the road you get crushed like a grape. Karate same thing, you do Karate - good, you don't do Karate - also good, you do Karate so so - get crushed like grape, understand Daniel san?

The lesson is that in order to succeed in any goal in life, a commitment will be required. "Yes, I guess so", is fine for agreeing to go to a movie, or to reluctantly agree to drive someone to the airport, but it will not be enough to earn a college degree, or a black belt, or succeed in the music business, for that you will require a "YES, I am IN all the way, totally committed."

So here is a secret to success: Want it, commit to it, stick to your goals, do not quit.
