Last night began the second yahrzeit for my dear mother. That means according to the Hebrew calendar it is exactly two years since she passed from this world. It was 4 days before Chanuka, a holiday that she loved so much. We had hoped we could have a family party, as we always did, in the hospice where she was staying but alas it was not to be. The cancer took her too soon.
And today I have tried to write about other things, Active Shooters, Knife attacks but I can't help it, I cannot let the day go by without writing about her, at least a little. I watched a video I took of her, speaking of her Uncle Gershon. I started filming videos of her, knowing that even if I were in denial, that day would eventually come when she would speak no more. I needed to hear voice today, so I listened to a video. And then in mid-sentence practically, the video ends and the voice stops. And it hit me, just like the videos stops and we can no longer hear the voice, so does life itself. For all of us, for all those we love and cherish, that moment will come, when the voice suddenly stops. The moment will come when for all the money in the world we will not be able to purchase one more moment with them. Cherish the time you have with those that matter.
My mother was a teacher, not just by profession but by nature, she gave of herself. She taught for many years and then when she retired, she taught for many more years. She taught me to read and write English, and she shared with me the joy of teaching. She said, "When you see that spark in the eye of a student, the 'I got it', and you relish that moment, then you know you are a true teacher, you were meant to be a teacher."
She never rebuked, she always taught with love. She had patience like the day is long. Her smile was enough to inspire any student to do better. As was as if every molecule of her face was made with magical love, it was imbued with love and radiated love. Her light is missed from this world, it is missed in my life. If only I had half of her patience, her kindness, her caring...the video ends, the voice is silent...
