Big names often draw big crowds - train with a world champion. But does that mean that you will become a world champion? Perhaps, perhaps not.
There are people born with natural talent, there are people who have naturally strong bodies, great flexibility or fast-twitch muscles. You can see it when they are just children. One child will hear a tune and walk over to the piano and begin to play it, despite having no lessons. Another child can spend a decade slaving over the piano only to show no results.
I recall a running coach telling us that he can watch two runners and chose the one who lost the race to be a member of his team. Why? the winner of the race might be a trained runner, and therefore he won, but the second-place guy used only natural speed, and still nearly one. The untrained runner showed natural talent, with some training he could become an Olympic athlete while the "winner" has already reached his peak.
Life is not always fair, and people are not all born equal, just the facts of life. So your teacher may have been a world champion kickboxer, perhaps his skill is due to his having developed some unique training methods, or perhaps he was just a big strong farm boy. This is the key issue. Are his skills transferable or not?
It is always nice to say you trained under a world champion, makes for great coffee conversation, but more importantly, what were you able to learn from him? I trained under many world-class martial artists and champions, (see martial arts leaders). Some, as I said, were just very gifted, naturally talented, I look back at my notes from those sessions and they are ...pretty empty. Some were inspirational and some actually were able to teach me skills that I still use and teach.
I will be honest; I am not a great athlete. I did not make the Junior high basketball team; I did make the high school team but there were only five boys in our high school, and I was the tallest. The skills I possess are not due to any sort of natural athletic ability, they are skills I have worked on and developed through many years of training and teaching. You do not have to be a natural athlete to succeed in our style of Krav Maga, you just have to be willing to put in the time and effort. My skills are transferable.
When considering an instructor, look at his students and ask yourself - Are those skills transferable to someone like myself?
