We all want to be relevant. We want our work to be relevant, otherwise there is no need for us. We want to be able to offer a service that has value, that answers the needs of our clients, or our students. A doctor that cannot heal has no reason to be a doctor. A composer that cannot compose pieces that people want to hear, has no purpose. He should seek another line of work.
We need to be relevant Krav Maga instructors, not relics of the past, not entertainers, not sleight-of-hand magicians.
To start off we need to acknowledge various factors, certain truths
We are dealing with matters of life and death, nothing less.
We are dealing with the physical and emotional, psychological well-being of ourselves and our students. We are dealing with possibility of life-long trauma or life-long physical pain. There is a lot at stake. We need to acknowledge that.
We must understand that we are -
Dealing with incomplete information. There is more unknown than known. Unlike the movies, or traditional kata pre-arranged forms, we really do not know that is coming next. Life is a chess game and a criminal's mind can come up with all sorts of unexpected moves. In life we did not the Corona crises, we did not see war, we did not see an end to international travel for 2 years. In the real world the unknown is greater than the known, we must understand that we operate largely in the dark, in chaos and confusion.
How many military experts totally misjudged situations and did not see war coming? How many economic experts did not see the recession, depression, we cannot gauge the wind and the coming storm. All we can do is prepare ourselves and make ourselves strong.
But we are often blinded, and thus, we cannot see clearly.
What blinds us?
The arrogance of rank blinds us. The arrogance of tradition, of thinking we know what is coming. Arrogance is the greatest obstacle to being prepared, it is the greatest downfall. Pride comes before a fall. Often it is others, outsiders, who can see our weakness more than we can.
Complacency is another killer, we become too comfortable in our lofty position, we forget what real pain is. Complacency blinds men to the truth.
For our Krav Maga to be relevant we cannot rest on the laurels of the past, we cannot become arrogant and focus on our ranks or past accomplishments. Crime is ever changing; violence is ever changing. The cartels of today are not the cartels of the previous generation, or decade, they are moving forward, and we are still kicking and punching in the air.
Water flows to the lowest point, water finds a path, always. Water overcomes all that is in its way. We must be humble like water.
