Ready for Life Krav Maga

I am heading towards the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Across the street I spot a sign that reads, "PUKY, Ready for Life". I have no clue, or interest, in what Puky is all about, but the sign sparks a thought. If we had to sum up the purpose of our training, of IKI Krav Maga, in one sentence, that would be it: Ready for life. That is what we are all about, preparing people for life, to live!
Our goal is not to hurt anyone, our goals is not to "prove ourselves" on the street or in the ring. Our goal is simply to prepare ourselves for life, with all its trials and tribulations. This preparation is both physical and mental. For many, Krav Maga is a way of overcoming trauma, fear, insecurities, a troubled past. I have had students tell me that Krav Maga brought them back from a dark abyss. For others it was what they needed to enter the real world, to apply for a job, even to get married. One young man thanked me for his wife on his wedding night, as she was a student of mine. He said that I made his marriage possible. Krav Maga for life.
There are martial arts that have other goals. The perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks in the USA apparently trained in local martial arts schools and told the instructors they wanted to learn only the attack techniques. I would turn away such a student. We are about life, not death. We are protectors, not attackers. Our goal is YOU, your survival, not your desire to hurt someone else.
For some of our students Krav Maga has been a tool in their fight against cancer, for some it has been a tool against abuse they suffered in relationships, for some it has proven to be the security they need to get home safely from work, for all it has been about life.
There is an old Jewish song, To Life, Le Chaim, Let us drink to life. Let us celebrate life.
