February 13, 2025, Delta Flight 585, Atlanta, USA - Mexico City, Mexico
Long day of travel, from Decatur, Illinois to Morelia, Mexico. Up early, two-and a half-hour drive to the airport in St. Louis, flight to Atlanta, flight to Mexico City, taxi to the bus terminal, 5-hour bus ride, etc. On the plane I try to find some familiar music to listen to, most of what is being presented is not my style, but I find a classic rock station and soon there are some familiar comforting sounds.
A flight is a time when time stands still and the mind wanders, nothing to do, just sit back and let the thoughts take over. The past, the future, the present, all merge into one, the dead, the living, unborn thoughts, reality and fantasy...
I see a red door
And I want it painted black
The Rolling Stones released the song in 1966, what a time that was, great music. Now years later the song takes on new meaning.
I see black, I see pain, there is color in the world, but the poet cannot see that now. The color bothers him because he sees the pain, the hurt, girls are dressed in their colorful summer clothes, but he cannot see them, not now.
People see pain... but
I've seen people turn their heads
And quickly look away, It happens every day
... not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up
When your whole world is black (Paint It Black, Rolling Stones)
“Paint It, Black” by The Rolling Stones is a song about overwhelming grief and despair.
I sit back, I feel the pain, from decades ago but now, we see black, we see pain, we see war, terrorism, children killed, women raped, but..people turn their heads away, it happens every day. By the time this flight lands how many more will have died? how many more all over the world will have been subject to such violence?
People don't want to see the facts, when your whole world is turning black, when the pain is almost too much to bear. I see the pain, and I don't turn away, I can see the colors as well, we must see both. That is why I am on the road now, to teach, to train, to educate, but first we must learn not to turn our heads away. As the poet wrote so many years ago, people don't want to see
I've seen people turn their heads
And quickly look away...It happens every day
I see a black day and I want to make a difference. Start training today!! (see below for options), or...turn away and don't look, it's not easy facing up...
