Real people: We see them on the streets, little shops, selling their wares, trying to eke out a living. We see them squeezed into trains; we see them on the streets. Real people, they come in all shapes and sizes, all ages, all levels of damage, levels of pain, levels of suffering. They walk beside us, they are in line at the market in front of us, people, all types. They are not fitness models; they are not being chosen for commercials or MTV music videos.
Each one of us bears many scars that we hide.
When I see Krav Maga programs advertised, I do not see these people represented. I see perfect bodies, sculptured, perhaps work done by a plastic surgeon, I see good skin and nice color. I do not see imperfections.
At our seminars I meet the real people, do we really know what hides behind a smile? Do we see the emotional and physical scars? Do we know what effort was taken to be here today?
One person may have recently lost a father, far too young. So he is not moving so fast, he is not as focused as a trained soldier, but he is doing his best. Another is recovering from a broken shoulder and made a huge effort to be here. Another has a child with a problem, and another is dealing with personal family issues that are tearing him apart.
One person might be very overweight, but he is down 30 Kilo from his previous weight and is trying his best. Another may have a chronic illness and nearly did not make it to the training. We just don't know.
These are the real people, not the "reel" people, not the instagram models. We train them all, the perfect system for imperfect people, physically, mentally and emotionally. We need to be attuned to their needs, to their challenges, we cannot expect the same from each one. We must take their circumstances into account. People are not made from one single mold, and life will shape each one of us as we go along. Let us truly "see" the other, and indeed we will discover beautiful people.
