It has been a long journey. I began with standing in a row and punching and kicking the air. I learned forms that had little to do with reality, although they did teach some important foundations. I trained in judo and jujitsu, and at each step of the journey I felt that I had found the answers, but that yet, so much remained unanswered. I searched, grew, learned but yet was always hungry for better answers. I trained in many styles and gained something from each. Some of what I gained would only surface years later, as I needed to adapt and develop new techniques.
As time went on IKI Krav Maga developed into a new system. At each step of the way we tried to, on one hand, simplify our techniques, but on the other hand, to cover more situations. Years ago, when I first started our on-line distance training program, I felt that I had covered everything. There would be no need for new videos in the future. But this was not the case. As IKI spread around the world more and more questions began coming in, questions concerning situations that I had never learned, never been exposed to, that my instructors never addressed.
Suddenly there was: How do you deal with the Gypsy Attack?, or what about the Zulu Stitching attack? or the Puerto Rican car hold up, or the New York subway attack, or Russian quick prison stab? and so forth and so on.
Our library of techniques grew, but in fact, it actually shrank. We know cover more situations than I ever thought imaginable, but yet, we have fewer techniques. What we do have a basic simple concepts based on gross motor movements and natural body instincts. We have techniques that are easy to learn, easy to apply in diverse situations, and easy to remember.
They have saved a woman from a handgun threat in Mexico City. They have saved a man from a rifle threat on route to Morelia, Mexico. They have save a nurse in Germany and a security guard in Australia, they have saved Israelis from terrorist attacks. Our techniques have saved the life of a kind man in South Africa as well held up by two attackers, one with a gun and one with a knife. They have saved a young woman in Puerto Rico from date rape.
We have far fewer techniques that other styles, only concepts and simple moves, but we cover a vast array of situations gleaned from all over the world. And we are never content.
There are a finite number of techniques one can learn, but an infinite number of situations one might encounter. Be prepared.
