I look around the Krav Maga world and I see many techniques that simply make me scratch my head and wonder...how the heck does anyone think this will work in a real life full speed violent confrontation?
The same applies of course for other martial arts, which goes without saying....kung fu, jujitsu etc etc.
Looking at these techniques performed by other Krav Maga schools makes me wonder; what were they thinking? were they thinking?
Here are some thoughts. I relate self-defense techniques to investments, probability and the laws of average, as well as the laws of physics.
I will sum up some of my thoughts.
Let's imagine you have $100,000 to invest. As your investment broker I will ask you what you are looking for and are you averse to risk. If you say you are looking for high returns and are willing to take some risk, I might recommend a real estate group that invests in shopping malls. If all goes well you will receive about $600 per month, nice.
On the other hand, if you are averse to risk, I might suggest a certificate of deposit, which in America is currently paying about 2.5% for a six-month CD. So, you will earn about $150 per month.
Now obviously we all prefer $600 over $150, but ...there is a catch. If you invest in the Shopping Malls things may happen: a store may leave or go out of business leaving you with an empty store. The market may change and your rent income may decrease. You, the investor, may receive a letter explaining that do to unforeseen circumstances you will not be receiving any income for the next year, or two. In fact the real estate company may decide to unload the property and sell it at a loss. So you will have lost part of your $100,000 and there will be no income, dividends or returns on your investment.
On the other hand, the fellow who put his $100,000 in the bank, is still collecting $150 each month. It is not a lot, but it is steady and safe.
Now we shall apply this analogy to Krav Maga.
These fancy techniques we see on YouTube or Facebook posted by Krav Maga "masters" from around the world. They dazzle, they impress, they look cool. My dad used to quote the late W. C. Fields, "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit." This is certainly true with Krav Maga, throw in some bravado, though tough talking, and you got yourself some fans. (and seminars)
Our analogy: what if I, as your Krav Maga investment broker, offered you the following two options:
1. High Risk - (like the Shopping Mall) - If it works, it works great, you will come out without any harm, no scratches, no bruises, no pain, but...if it fails, well, you can lose everything.
2. Low Risk (like the 6 month deposit in the bank) - It will work 99% of the time, but you will have a little pain, you might get a few bruises and a few scratches, you might even get cut a little bit, but, you will live. Our Universal Block, our simple techniques will serve you well. You may not look so cool but you will walk away from this, alive.
So the choice is yours. We go with the "High Percentage" moves. We go with the fat part of the graph in the Probability table/Standard Deviation (you see all those years of university paid off after all). We respect the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle that we cannot know with certainty the positions of complementary variables, such as position and momentum, which makes almost all martial arts techniques useless in real life violent situations. Simply put, based on the study of reality we teach you techniques that actually have a decent chance of working when all hell breaks loose. We put you in the High Percentage zone.
There are no guarantees in life, the bank may collapse, your country may be conquered, or collapse from revolution, but there are higher percentages and lower percentages, that is what I dealt with when I worked on Wall Street.
I still deal with the same concepts, only now the stakes are higher, it is not your money I deal with, it is your life. This is not the place to gamble.
Stay Safe.
