Forgotten Students

All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the hurting people where do they all come from?
The world is filled with pain, with danger, with Darkness, it is easy to avoid, it is easy to turn your head and look away, it is easy to close your heart to the suffering of others, the unknown masses. But they are all over the place. We pass them on the street, but we do not see their pain, their fear, their suffering. They are on the streets of Mexico, where I just was, and Holland, where I will be next.
To be an effective Krav Maga instructor, we must see them. We must feel them.
But what do I see? I see schools, associations, that want to grow, but how, and why? They want to increase their business, that is understandable. Every business must grow, or else it will die. Our IKI schools are often approached by other associations wishing to "recruit" them, all is fair in love and war. But it makes me wonder about their motivation; are you in this "business" to get rich, or do you truly want to help others?
When I was interviewing for a position in the financial field, many years ago, I was asked, "What would you do if you just discovered that you inherited a fortune?" My answer, "I would quit this job and devote my time to helping others". I was not hired. That is fine, I went on to become a Krav Maga instructor and now I am living my dream.
I have a degree in Business, but I am not a businessman. I graduated with honors from Bernard Baruch College, scored a perfect score on the Econometrics exam, but Krav Maga is a passion, the desire to reduce suffering in this world. You cannot buy me.
I see organizations trying to recruit our schools, even me! but what about those who truly need recruiting? What about all the lonely people, the people who are suffering and truly need to learn to defend themselves, why are they not the target audience? It is them whom we must reach, and that is why I write, and travel and try to spread the word, and I am asking you to do the same.
Speak to people about Krav Maga, spread the word, increase awareness, share the blogs, this is the most important thing we can do. I will admit, I have not been that successful myself, most of my family and friends do not train in Krav Maga, but we must never give up. As long as we can breathe, we must speak the truth.
Marketers are trained to look for the best customers, as Krav Maga instructors and practitioners we must look for those who truly need our services. We must find "all the lonely people", the quiet ones, those who do not speak up. We must speak for them; we must reach them.
They walk the streets with fear, like street cats they are cautious of their surroundings, looking here and there before eating their food, they are invisible to the naked eye, Hello Darkness my old friend.
It is they whom we must find, it is to them that we must open our doors and greet them with a smile that will put them at ease.
