Tour and Train, Old City of Jerusalem, Arab market. We stay alert and focused. My back is to the wall as I scan the area. On the opposite wall are some members of IKI Tour and Train including the late wonderful Anders Jensen of Denmark, may he rest in peace.
Sitting in the airport lounge having gone through several layers of security, I feel calm and relaxed. It is highly unlikely that an Arab terrorist would be able to get into here, so I am not on the highest alert. However, one still must remain alert, such things have happened before, employees turned terrorists etc.
I can sit, have coffee and work on my laptop, but if this were downtown Jerusalem, or some other busy area, I would not be relaxed. I would be on constant alert. I would imagine every possible scenario and try to be prepared. I do not want to be caught by surprise.
My mind has been on terrorism lately. My mind has been on knife attacks. This morning I received a call from one of our top instructors in America, he works security in Chicago. Turns out Chicago is also going through a series of knife attacks, although the motivation is different from Israel.
He told me he saw a crime scene closed off, identified himself as a security professional and asked what had happened, "knife attack". These usually end in death.
We discussed the concepts that I taught and demonstrated during Tour and Train in Israel, how I look and behave in public, the vigilance and the constant surveillance. As he said, yes, we appear to some as paranoid. We are not.
He knows city life and how cautious and aware one must be. I am reminded of a song from my younger days. Ironically the name of the band is "The Police", and we can use their lyrics to learn a few safety tips.
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you
Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I will edit it now to change it from a love song to a Krav Maga song.
Every move you make
Every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, I'll be watching you
I dream at night, I can see your face
I look around
And yes, that is how we train, it becomes habit, second nature. As an older songs says, "We won't be fooled again."
Perhaps the most important self defense concept you can learn is to be aware, situational awareness.
Be careful where you go, keep good company, and keep your eyes open.
IKI Tour and Train, Old City of Jerusalem, Arab market.
Sticking together as a group is an excellent defense, especially when all are well trained in Krav Maga.
