Wisdom can come from many sources. While on social media, working on Krav Maga publicity, there was one of those "shorts", few minutes of comedy, why not? It was from a TV program my mother, may she rest in peace, used to enjoy, and I watched it with her a few times, Modern Family. In this particular 2-minute short, the wife Gloria played by SofĂa Vergara is meant to accompany her much older husband, Jay, played by Ed O'Neill to see an important client. However, for some unknown reason, the normally well-dressed and fashionable Gloria refuses to dress nicely and is wearing a sweatshirt and clown like makeup. Finally, her husband gives in and asks what this is all about. I found the explanation enlightening.

She points out that her husband who is about 25 years older than herself, has stopped making an effort with his appearance. He is not trying to look nice, and this bothers her. To teach him a lesson about how embarrassing that could be, she made a point of looking as unattractive as she could. (difficult being that she is very attractive, but...this is a TV show). When she asks him why he stopped investing in his appearance, he gave the following answer.

A few weeks ago, I was in clothing shop trying on some clothing, some younger men looked at me and started laughing. Here I am this older guy trying to look nice, attractive, appealing. They laughed at me, and I realized they were correct. I was making a fool of myself. I decided to just let myself go, be an old man, that is what I am

Gloria responded. You know why I married you? Besides the money, although that was an important factor (after all this is a comedy), it is because I found you attractive, sexy. Who knows how long we have left? Who knows how long you will still be attractive, both of us! I don't want you to stop making an effort. We both need to make an effort, for each other!

The penny dropped. I get it, and this was inspiring.

An old guy can go to a gym, or a fat guy, or a skinny guy, and feel that people are laughing at him, which they very well might be. But we must never give up, we must never forget that we want to feel better about ourselves. It is not for the outside world, it is for us, our relationships that matter. "We both need to make an effort".

I feel this is a valuable lesson for life. Never stop making an effort, get up, get dressed, get out of the house. I remember my dear Uncle Sam Reifer, may he rest in peace, always looked spiffy, with a suit and a tie, a martini and a cigar. He was classy, even if he had no place to go anymore as he was retired.

In terms of Krav Maga, no matter what level you are currently at, beginner, awkward, more coordination, never give up. Remember Gloria's words, We both need to make an effort. Let's do it for ourselves.
