Doubt and Progress

The person who walks into the training hall for the first time is displaying an act of courage. Naturally others will know more than you, naturally others will think that you are not here for the long run, so why bother even paying attention to you. Naturally you will doubt yourself, your decision to be here. Doubt is a key factor in this operation. You must expect doubt to creep in, but you must not let these feelings of doubt cripple your progress.

You might doubt if you will ever achieve anything, you might doubt if this effort is even worth your time, you might doubt if you are even capable of learning this new task you set out for, after all, most have failed.

Will I really be able to learn Italian? do I have any chance? most of my friends who tried, failed, why should I even try? Will I ever be able to learn Krav Maga? Do I have enough time to learn this? and what will I really gain from it?

Doubt, doubt, doubt. In the end these feelings of doubt can cripple your progress. But here is where your imagination and will power play a key part. Can you enter the realm of imagination? can you dream? can you imagine that someday you will be fluent in Italian, or be a great rabbi teaching classes, or be a great martial arts master or a musician performing in front of thousands of fans?

Are you limited by your past failures, can you see beyond what you have accomplished so far, is the sky limit or are you limited by your previous failures and experiences?

Every black belt grandmaster was once a white belt. Every great composer was once a child sitting and listening to his teacher, every teacher was once a student, every great craftsman was once an apprentice.

There is a realm that is closed to some yet open to others, it is the realm of imagination. Imagination creates the opportunity, hard work creates the possibility, dedication brings us to our desired outcome. Doubt will creep in, we must accept that, acknowledge that and understand it. Doubt is part of our lives but we not let prevent us from living our lives, from fulfilling our dreams.
