In Israel we have constant reminders of our history, ancient and modern. Our town's name first appears in the book of Joshua over 3,000 years ago. The names of our streets are all Biblical. The synagogue is named in honor of a fallen soldier, the son of a member of our community. All over Israel the streets have historic significance. Buildings, parks, playgrounds, are named for soldiers who died bravely in combat, sacrificing their young lives so that we can live. It is all around us.
Daily we see news reports of stabbings by terrorists, or drive-by shootings, or bombings or car ramming. Violence is all around us, our history is all around us, we cannot forget. Evil walks besides us.
But now I am in the USA, touring the country and teaching Krav Maga. For me this is a pleasant break from the war we are experiencing in Israel. Of course, I am still following the news daily and receiving constant updates from Israel, but the pressure is off, for now, and I feel more relaxed.
I travel through pleasant valleys, where all seems peaceful. I visit areas with names like Niceville, Greenville and Pleasantville. I am reminded of a childhood song, Pleasant Valley Sunday. But one must be careful, not to fall asleep at the wheel, and not to be fooled. For even here, behind the pleasant valley, there is danger, and we must never forget this.
Dig a little deeper and you shall find it. There is a deep darkness here as well.
Lying awake late at night in hotel rooms, unable to sleep due to jetlag, I find interesting programs, with names like Cold Crime, Unsolved Crimes or Forensic Reports, I learn about terrible crimes that have taken place behind pleasant facades; here too there is a darkness on the edge of town. Here too there are bodies in unmarked graves. And here too our training is required.
Dig a little deeper and you find truly horrific crimes, brutal murder and rape. Under blue skies and behind rolling hills dark secrets are hidden. Gang rapes, murder of husbands and wives, drug deals and gang wars. The crime is here, the violence is real. One must be careful not to fall asleep in Pleasant Valley, here too our work is required.
