One of my greatest advantages was that I was not born a natural athlete. In fact, for most of my early childhood I never participated in any school sporting activities. During soccer games I would just walk around waiting until the game was over. Instead of going to Judo I just rode my bicycle until class was over and then rode home. This disadvantage has proven to be a great advantage, both as a student and as an instructor. I have had to work harder; I have had to break apart techniques and analyzed them. I have had to learn to be patient with myself.
As a instructor these qualities are very important. I pity the student whose teacher is a natural-born athlete. This teacher will be greatly challenged to understand the struggles of ordinary people. He will think of them as slow, stupid, annoying. I have heard the comments.
Every disadvantage carries a potential advantage. Can a short woman become a Krav Maga instructor? Yes, and in fact many are outstanding instructors. They cannot rely upon their physical strength. They cannot "force" a technique, they need to properly understand the technique and learn to use every ounce of their body to generate force.
Can an older person become a Krav Maga instructor? Yes, we have instructors in their 70's and one even taught into his early 80's. Some have handicaps that they must deal with, a damaged shoulder, a bad hip, but these disadvantages force them to adapt, improvise and improve a technique. In addition, they are an inspiration to other "less than perfect" human beings.
The nation of Israel is a perfect example of this: we are a tiny country with a small population, surrounded by enemies bent on our destruction and annihilation, and yet we survive. We do so by coming up with innovative defenses and strategies. David was much smaller than Goliath, but he used that to his advantage and surprised the giant, felling him with a simple shepherd's sling shot. There is a moral, a lesson, to this this story. That is why we are still studying it.
David was not a warrior, at the time, he was not physically impressive, but he proved himself in combat. He used an innovative approach; he displayed courage and conviction. We can all be a David, if we choose to.
